Fish Bowl

- Youth Club -

Fishbowl Youth Club was started in 2002 by a group of students from the ALFA Project secondary school in Scariff. The idea behind Fishbowl was to create somewhere where students from the ALFA, Scariff Community College and Youthreach could meet and get to know each other. The young people involved also wanted a chance to travel and meet new people.

Since 2002, Fishbowl has come a long way. Now, in 2007, we have more then thirty five members aged 15 to 20 plus five leaders. Fishowl has sent participants on exchanges in Spain, Romania, Portugal, Poland, Slovenia and Uruguay and hosted an exchange here in Ireland in 2005, involving groups from Romania, Portugal, Poland and Slovenia.

Four of our members are on the national Youth Advisory Group and members travel up and down to Dublin regularly to attend youth events hosted by NYCI (National Youth Council of Ireland) or Leargas or other youth organisations.

Fishbowl is located in the CDP building, Derg House, Scariff, but we are looking to re-locate due to lack of space for our ever growing membership.

The main interests of our group include music, art, theatre and dance. We host regular bands nights in Scariff GAA hall to give young musicians a chance to play. Workshops are organised depending on the interests of the group. So far they've included singing, capawara, song writing, guitar lessons, breakdancing, film making, safe sex and drug awareness, groups work and others.

Our members now come from a much larger area then just Scariff. Tulla, Feakle, Tuamgrney, Flagmount, Mountshannon, Whitegate, Gurteeny, Woodford and beyond all have regular fishbowlers. We're open every Friday from 6 until 10 and are always happy to welcome new members, aged fifteen and above. We have meetings every Wednesday with our core group of about ten.

Although Fishbowls decisions are left to the members and the members run the meetings, we wouldn't be anywhere today without our leaders, in particular Bonnie Boyle and Mieke McMahon, who have both sacrificed and worked countless long hard hours for us. We'll never be able to thank them enough for the incredible opportunites they've given us!!!
