Tidy Towns

This is an information page for
The ‘Mountshannon Tidy Towns Committee’

Mountshannon has been recognised for its beauty for quite some time. Over the years it has received many awards for its fantastically presented street and surroundings. The village was the overall national winner of The Tidy Towns award in 1981. This competition is an annual event in Ireland and the village continues to perform very well every year. Last year's result was an improvement on the previous year and we were only a few marks off the total scored by the overall winner. There is a great expectation, that that the overall title will be ours once more in the not too distant future.

The fact that Mountshannon can lay claim to being one of the most beautiful villages in Ireland is a reason for the great pride that the local population have for the village. There is great community spirit among the people of Mountshannon. Starting early every spring, when the evenings begin to get longer you will see people making great efforts to ensure improvements are made on the previous year's result. Hedges are trimmed, flowerbeds replanted and any stray litter is picked up. It is a great sight to see as slowly all the work gets done and the village awakens from its winter slumber.

Mountshannon is also lucky to have one of the most beautifull harbours on the Shannon water system. It is a great place to go visit when you have some free time. During the summer months there always seems to be a great hustle and bustle. It is in a perfect location to lure in many of the tourist cruisers and yachts that use Lough Derg. The village is only a very short uphill walk from the harbour, but the views are very worthwhile.

The harbour has also been awarded many prestigous awards in recent years, for both beauty and water quality. The quality of water is very good, and a Blue Flag award has been granted to the harbour for the last few years. This makes it a great place for water sports such as swimming.
