Mogh Roith
- Historical Re-enactment Group -
Mogh Roith are a small Historical Re-enactment group based in Counties Clare and Limerick,
in the Republic of Ireland. We are individuals drawn together by our interest in Irish History,
historical arts and crafts and methods of war and combat throughout the ages. The group aims to
bring to life their interest in history in an exciting and dynamic way and make it accessible to
the general public. Living History, Living Archaeology and Battle Re-enactment are the means by
which we achieve these goals.
Mogh Roith can usually be found on dispaly at the Mountshannon Fair day or throughout the year
working on projects with loacal historical group 'East Clare Heritage' based in Tuamgranery,
with Shannon Heritage at their 'Craggaunowen Project - Heritage Centre' or
at re-enactments around the country.
What we do:
Mogh Roith partakes in re-enactments, re-creations or displays of events in history spanning
from the Mesolithic through to the 17th century. Our strongest collective focus is in the Early
Christian/Viking period which makes up about 90% of re-enactment in Ireland. Several of our
members are well kitted out for 16th century Irish and English also, which would account for
about another 5% of shows. The other 5% of re-enactments being the Norman, Napoleonic, Neolithic,
Bronze and Iron Age periods respectively. Mogh Roith does not 'act' in the 'first person'.
We find that it does not carry over well with the public and most people find it silly.
We are aware we are not from the past and that the public know that only too well.
It also allows us to admit when we don't know something and keeps things honest.
